Sisters give a priceless Raksha Bandhan gift-their kidney | Jaipur News

JAIPUR: A 40-year-old man residing abroad came to Jaipur to celebrate Raksha Bandhan with his younger sister, who bestowed upon him a truly precious gift-her kidney. Doctors had said that a kidney transplant was essential for his survival, as he was battling with renal failure.
His sister made the noble decision to donate her kidney, becoming his lifesaver. The surgery took place at a private hospital here on Tuesday, marking a profound moment of sibling bond and selflessness on the eve of Raksha Bandhan.
When TOI contacted the family members, they expressed the wish that their identities not be revealed.
Head of department (nephrology) Dr Suraj Godara, who did the transplant at the private hospital in Jaipur, said, “The siblings have a bonding that is quite special. On Raksha Bandhan, brothers and sisters exchange gifts, but this is the very gift of life given by a sister to her brother.”
He added, “Many sisters donate kidney to save the life of their brothers. We have performed at least three such procedures in the past week in which the kidney donors were sisters.”
Similarly, in Bundi, a farmer’s three sisters, all married, competed to donate their kidneys to save the life of their brother who had been put on regular dialysis and required kidney transplant.
“My brother has been shifted from hospital to a rented accommodation to stay at a hygienic and clean place two days ago, after the kidney transplant. My 49-year-old sister was found to be a suitable donor. The other two sisters did not medically qualify to be a donor,” said Sukh Lal, elder brother of the patient, Ramswaroop, resident of Budhpura in Bundi district.
At the government-run Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital, senior professor and head of department Dr Dhananjai Agarwal said, “In 85% of the kidney donations, it is women who donate kidneys to men in the family. Most of the kidney transplants are happening because of sisters, wives and mothers.”
At SMS hospital, a kidney transplant was performed a few days ago, in which two sisters agreed to donate their kidney to their ailing sister. One of the two was found suitable for donation.
