Scrub Typhus: Scrub Typhus Infects 854 In State In 35 Days | Jaipur News
JAIPUR: From August 4 to September 8, as many as 854 cases of scrub typhus, 129 of them from different parts of Jaipur, were reported in the state, health department officials said on Monday.
The health department has alerted officials that with rains continuing, there will be growth in vegetation and bushes, making it conducive for the mite causing scrub typhus to flourish. This infection is spread by Orientia Tsutsugamushi bacteria, found in hot and humid conditions, mostly forests. Health department officials said that in green areas, people should wear boots and cover body parts to avoid bites of the mite.
“In Jaipur, cases are being reported from the Walled City areas. We are keeping an eye on the situation,” said Dr Vijay Singh, chief medical health officer (Jaipur -I).
Domesticated animals can be a medium of spread of scrub typhus. The highest number of scrub typhus cases has been reported from Udaipur in the 35 days up to September 8, where 135 persons were tested positive for the infection. In Dausa, 65 persons were found infected with scrub typhus in these 35 days.
From January 1 to September 8, the state reported 1,177 scrub typhus cases and four persons died due to the disease. The deaths were reported from Dholpur, Dausa, Sikar and Kota.
When the infected mite bites a person, it leaves a small black spot. Some of the symptoms of scrub typhus are fever and chills, rash, headache, body aches and muscle pain, and a dark, scab-like region at the site of the chigger bite.
