19 Spotted Deer Shifted To Nahargarh To Up Prey Base | Jaipur News
Jaipur: To increase prey base in Nahargarh Wildlife Sanctuary, the forest department on Wednesday translocated 19 spotted deer from Ashok Vatika. The department released four males, 12 females and three fawns in Beed region of the sanctuary.
An official said, “The work to develop the vegetation and environment was done before the translocation of spotted deer. Five cameras have been installed for round-the-clock monitoring and two water points were constructed.”
As per the wildlife estimation 2020, there are five leopard cubs and 10 adult leopards, including three females and seven males, in the sanctuary encompassing an area of about 52 square kilometre. The department is also working on a plan to open a leopard safari on two routes in the sanctuary.
An official said, the population of deer in national parks and wildlife sanctuaries should be 40 per square kilometre and 35 or less per square kilometre, respectively. “To maintain the balance, deer were released. In the absence of adequate prey, the leopards can move out of their natural habitat and hunt domestic animals in adjoining villages, leading to human and animal conflict.”
Plans are also afoot to start leopard safari in the sanctuary. For the same, the routes earmarked are between Papad ke Hanuman Ji -Mayala Bagh and Biological Park – Odiram Sagar.
“The approval to open these routes has been received. The work to develop the grassland and tracks will be started soon,” added the official.
Buoyed by the success of Jhalana and Amaghati in the state, the department is confident that the safari in Nahargarh will attract tourists.
