Rajasthan: Alwar man manages death certificate to claim Rs 1 crore insurance money, held | Jaipur News

ALWAR/JAIPUR: A 56-year-old Alwar man, who managed his death certificate through unfair means to get his post-death insurance benefits amounting to Rs 1 crore, was finally arrested by Kotwali police almost 20 months after he ‘died’. Earlier, he had managed to skip a payment of Rs 16 lakh to a person by faking his death.
According to police, Neeraj Sharma has been living in Manu Marg locality of Alwar city for a long time.
“When Covid started, he lost his father and had applied for the death certificate. After getting the death certificate, he came up with this idea of first getting two insurance policies of Rs 50 lakh each as death benefits in October 2020. He also managed a death certificate for himself to apply for the post-death claims,” said a senior officer of Kotwali police station on Tuesday.
According to police, the accused got his death certificate issued by the Nagar Parishad, Alwar, by misrepresenting facts and conniving with cremation ground officials whose record is taken to get a death certificate issued.
“After getting the certificate, he first managed to skip the payment of Rs 16 lakh to be paid as rent to a woman in Alwar for a marriage garden which was due since 2017. Also since January 2021, he confined himself to his house. His wife and other members used to tell everyone that he died of Covid and his body was also not given to family and neighbours believed it,” the officer added.
Thereafter, through his wife, he applied for death benefits for himself by putting the death certificate on record with the insurance company. “While the insurance company officials were verifying facts related to his death, one day the brother of Neeraj spilled the beans and informed them that he was alive. A case of cheating and forgery was lodged against him. Finally, after an investigation, Neeraj was arrested,” the officer added.
Also, Neha Yadav, whose Rs 16 lakh was not paid to her by Neeraj, also saw him in the vegetable market almost a month ago. “The woman recorded it and put it on record in the court in which she was fighting a case of loan repayment against the accused,” the officer added.
Neeraj’s father Chandrashekhar Sharma was an IAS officer and he had also cleared the written exam of UPSC but could not succeed in the interview.
