Ruhs: Thalassemia Inst To Come Up At Ruhs Hosp | Jaipur News

Jaipur: For better management of thalassemia, sickle cell disease and hemophilia, the State Institute of Hemoglobinopathy Management, Research and Control (SIHMRC) is coming up at RUHS Hospital in the city.
The institute will be a ray of hope for the thalassemia patients who need blood transfusion, at least twice a month. Since bone marrow transplant (BMT) is a treatment available for such children, the institute will help in providing them bone marrow transplant.
“Children with thalassemia, who are eligible for BMT will be identified at the centre and they will get the BMT for treatment. We have a state cancer institute on RUHS premises for BMT,” Dr Sudhir Bandari, vice-chancellor, Rajasthan University of Health Sciences (RUHS).
BMT is a medical procedure available for children with thalassemia in which stem cells harvested from a healthy donor are transplanted into the bone marrow of the recipient with thalassemia.
Apart from helping eligible children for getting BMT, Dr Bhandari said, “The children with thalassemia require regular blood transfusion for the purpose of making easy availability of blood for them, the children will be clubbed with voluntary blood donors for helping them in getting blood.”
The institute will ensure proper care and management of children with thalassemia. “For helping children with thalassemia, donors should regularly donate the blood so that these children will get uninterrupted availability of blood,” said Dr Satendra Singh, assistant professor (transfusion medicine) and incharge, JK Lon hospital’s blood bank.
At the centre, facilities including OPD, IPD, ICU and operation theatre will be made available along with lab investigations, advance blood bank, BMT, well being and rehabilitation, counselling, molecular analysis, physiology, pharmacy, training and teaching. “We have organised an awareness online programme on thalassemia to make RUHS doctors aware of it. Thalassemia can be prevented if people are aware and get screened for it,” said Dr Lokendra Sharma, principal and controller, Alwar medical college, who organised the webinar at RUHS hospital for doctors and paramedical staff.
