AAP: No takers for AAP in Rajasthan assembly polls | Reasons and Analysis | Jaipur News

JAIPUR: Hoping to recreate its magic of the February 2022 assembly polls in neighbouring Punjab, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) fielded 88 candidates in the Rajasthan assembly polls and promised free electricity, better educational and medical facilities, among others. But the party failed to make an impact, and all its 85 candidates in the fray lost their security deposits.
Out of the 88 candidates announced by AAP in Rajasthan, two did not file nominations, preferring to support Congress, and the election for the Karanpur seat is pending. Now, after the Rajasthan poll results are out, AAP leaders in the state attribute the party’s dismalperformance to the inactiveness of its senior leadership and the fact that many of its leaders are facing charges by Enforcement Directorate.
AAP leaders in Rajasthan believe the party’s senior leadership only fielded candidates on 88 seats but did not bother about holding election rallies. “They left the candidates on their own,” said one of them. In election rallies held at Thanagazi in Alwar district and Neem Ka Thana, Delhi chief minister and AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal had promised free electricity and better educational and medical institutes in Rajasthan.
“In total, 88 candidates (of AAP) were in the fray. Except for Thangazi, where our candidate secured 19,000 votes, and Neem Ka Thana, where our candidate got 3,500 votes, other candidates got merely between 500 and 1,000 votes,” said AAP’s Rajasthan unit president Naveen Paliwal to TOI.
He also said that AAP candidates in about ten seats “betrayed the party’s trust by either asking votes for BJP or for Congress”. The party is currently collecting evidence against such candidates and would take strict disciplinary action against them, added Paliwal.
“The party’s senior leaders should have come to Rajasthan and organised rallies. Why will people vote for us if they are not given the party’s vision for Rajasthan?” asked an AAP candidate who got less than 500 votes.
In the 2018 assembly polls in Rajasthan, AAP had fielded candidates in 142 of the state’s total 200 constituencies. “All those candidates of our party had lost their security deposit in that poll, too,” said an AAP office bearer in Jaipur.
