Aerial route busy, donor’s heart brought to city via Delhi-Mum expressway for 1st time | Jaipur News

JAIPUR: For the first time the Delhi-Mumbai expressway was used for transportation of a heart, that of a donor from Sir Ganga Ram hospital in Delhi to a private hospital in Jaipur, on Friday.
The donor was declared brain dead at Sir Ganga Ram hospital, following which his family took the decision of donating his organs. Since the aerial route was busy due to VIP movement for the Rajasthan CM’s oath taking ceremony, the only option available was the Delhi-Mumbai expressway.
The heart was harvested at 2pm on Friday and it reached Jaipur’s Mahatma Gandhi Hospital (MGH) in four hours by road.
“A 43-year-old father of three children who had end-stage heart failure was the recipient of the heart. His heart function was 15% and two of his heart valves had severe leaks. He needed repeated admissions into the ICU for a semblance of relief. He had bypass surgery (CABG) a year earlier. Urgent heart transplant was the only option for him,” said Dr Murtaza Ahmad Chishti, director, heart surgery and heart and lung transplant, at MGH here. A donor heart became available in Sir Ganga Ram hospital which matched our patient perfectly. Our heart procurement team was dispatched to New Delhi during the night of December 14,” said Dr Chishti.
The donor heart was retrieved by the team from Jaipur at 1:24 pm and brought to Mahatma Gandhi Hospital by road in four hours as air ambulance wouldn’t be allowed due to VIP movement. The ambulance carrying the heart rushed speedily through a “green corridor” created from Delhi to Gurgaon and again from Dausa to Mahatma Gandhi Hospital.
Transplanting organs, especially the heart, is always a race against time. The transplant procedure was started by in the evening of Friday and after completion of the operation, the new heart began working. The patient was transferred to the ICU by midnight and remained stable. He was weaned off ventilator at 1:30pm on Saturday, about 13 hours after surgery, and is in stable condition.
