Ashish Modi, district collector and district election officer of Bhilwara, on Saturday said that his district is the first district to have this kind of a mechanism. “With this App, we would be able to monitor if the polling teams if they actually visited the homes of senior citizens aged 80 years and above and done their job of facilitating them to cast their votes. We would be able to track their location. Real-time tracking will also help us to avert chances of foul play, if any,” said Modi while talking to TOI.
He added that the purpose of this mobile-based application is to help Returning officer (RO) in real-time monitoring of form 12D filling, vote casting and it will provide a ready dashboard to him as well as to district election office for better monitoring.
“We have provided three separate logins for RO, polling officers (PO) and block level officer (BLO) who are involved in entire process of voting for ‘Absentee Voters’ (those allowed to cast their votes from home). The purpose of the application is monitoring the entire exercise. It will help RO in better planning and will also make scheduling and deployment of polling parties easier,” Modi added.

Monitor pollution real-time: Experts
Experts in Mumbai suggest that real-time monitoring of polluting sites and simultaneous assessment of measures taken to combat air pollution are crucial. The current problem includes gaseous emissions, ozone levels, and fine particles. The use of smog guns, as seen in Delhi, has proven to have little impact. Construction sites, industry emissions, and traffic must be closely monitored and clear guidelines should be in place to protect construction sites and prevent dust from escaping. The National Clean Air Program has set targets for reducing particulate matter by 2024, but Mumbai’s air quality has worsened since the program began in 2017. The Prime Minister’s Office has called for intervention to address pollution in Mumbai. Dust mitigation plans for construction sites, the deployment of anti-smog guns, and expert evaluation of pollution sources have been proposed. Dense and effective monitoring, real-time analytics, and immediate action are necessary to combat the issue.

In an effort to improve voter turnout, 36 polling stations in Thane, India will be set up in club houses or within housing complexes. This move aims to encourage residents to vote within their societies rather than traveling to public polling stations. Additionally, all polling stations will be located on the ground floor to accommodate elderly and disabled voters. The Thane election department has intensified voter registration drives and registered nearly 1.29 lakh voters, with a focus on enrolling more voters in the 18-19 age group.

Record inflows in small savings schemes for senior citizens, women
The Indian government is considering post-tax returns on small savings schemes, such as the Public Provident Fund (PPF), when setting quarterly rates. The Senior Citizen Savings Scheme and Mahila Samman Savings Certificate have seen significant inflows, with investments estimated at over Rs 1 lakh crore. By factoring in tax benefits, the government aims to lower open market borrowings. The interest rates on small savings are adjusted every quarter and have remained unchanged for schemes like PPF. The Reserve Bank of India has raised the repo rate, but PPF rates have not increased.
