Jaipur: Delegates from different countries like Sweden, Israel, Austria on Thursday visited the office of Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) Heritage where a workshop, ‘Mayor’s Forum for Global Policy Framework and Governance’, was conducted to understand the best practices of solid waste management. At the workshop, all participating representatives believed corporations and municipalities should have the freedom to collect their own sources of income, which can help them manage resources better and keep the city clean.
Munesh Gurjar, mayor JMC-Heritage said, “We are learning from the innovations being done in other cities to keep them clean. Waste needs to be disposed of according to the local conditions because different types of waste are generated in all the cities. With the help of various voluntary organisations, the residents of the city are being motivated to reduce waste disposal on streets along with reducing use of polythene bags. Waste collection vehicles have also been deployed for disposal of waste coming out of hospitals and other institutions.”
She further said that a plant is being set up by the corporation to make tiles for construction of buildings from construction and demolition waste. At this plant, electricity will also be generated from waste.
Doron Sapir, deputy mayor of Tel Aviv said that he has focused on the education of waste management in his city and electricity is being generated from 2,000 tons of waste generated daily in Tel Aviv.
The conference was organised to bring garbage collection in different cities under a similar format with an integrated plan, promote use of technology in this process and learn from practices of different cities.
