Chambal River In Icu, Riverfront A Blot On Environment: Experts | Jaipur News

Kota: No place for traditional plants and trees, nor any sustainable measures to check pollution and maintain greenery, were concerns noted by a group of enviromentalists who visited the construction site of Chambal Riverfront, a Rs 1200-crore project that is nearly complete, on Wednesday.
The group of 10 environmentalists associated with Chambal Parliament and People’s World Commission for Flood and Drought (PWCFD) alleged that multiple pollutants plagued the Chambal river which was lying in “ICU” (Intensive Care Unit) while the state government was spending crores of rupees only on cosmetic surgery.
The delegation noted that the site was to be adorned only with decorative plants and trees that do no good to the environment. They said that purely stone and metallic structures formed the 2.7-kilometre riverfront on each bank of the Chambal river from Kota Barrage to Nayapura.
The environmentalists also reviewed the water treatment plants for nullahs that flow into the river. Executive engineer of the Urban Improvement Trust (UIT) C P Shukla accompanied the delegation to explain the action plan to stop pollutants from flowing into the river.
The delegation noted that while there is a treatment plant almost ready for 18 nullahs flowing into the river, no such plant exists for the upstream nullahs at Shivpura, Godawridham and Sajidhera which carry polluted water from a large population in the city and fall into the river yearlong, said Brijesh Vijayvergiya, convener of the Chambal Parliament. The Chambal River, members of the delegation said, could be personified as a patient lying in ICU in critical condition. Huge stone and metal structures were being erected that looked like a velvet curtain being rolled over mud and dirt, they said.
