Civil Lines: In Civil Lines – Politics of Ram bhakt versus Ram’s descendants | Jaipur News | Jaipur News

Jaipur: In Jaipur’s Civil Lines constituency, BJP and Congress are both banking on their connect with Lord Ram.
BJP’s Gopal Sharma has asserted that he belongs to the clan of Ram’s guru, Vashishtha, and on the other, Congress candidate Pratap Singh Khachariyawas has been claiming he is the Lord’s descendant.
As both bank on Ram’s blessings to see them past the pole position, both parties are also working overtime to counter the other.
“Those who call themselves descendants of Lord Ram today had once denied his existence. These people used to talk about building hospitals, libraries over the Ram janambhoomi…”, Sharma said, while campaigning against Khachariyawas this week.
Sharma also claimed he belongs to the Vashishtha Gotra, which Lord Ram’s guru represented.
“If Pratap Singh claims to be a descendant of Ram, he should know I too am a descendant of Ram’s guru Vashishtha. He should know how to address one’s guru. Ram would never accuse his guru of being a blackmailer,” Sharma said.
Sharma, however, has been countered not just by Khachariyawas, but also by chief minister Ashok Gehlot, who underscored the incumbent cabinet minister’s ‘Ram connection’ at a campaign rally in Civil Lines constituency on Monday.
“Pratap Singh Khachariyawas is available for the public around the clock. He is the descendant of Lord Ram and he is in our cabinet as a minister. The real son of the soil is engaged in public welfare. We do not do politics of conflict and riots. Our only aim is that every hungry person should get bread, youth should get employment, farmers and labourers should get respect. Mothers, sisters, and daughters should have smiles on their faces,” Gehlot said.
In the last leg before polling day, both parties have stepped up their attempt to deploy soft Hindutva with slogans of ‘Jai Shri Ram’ and ‘Jai Siya Ram’ during their campaigns.
