Congress: Congress relies on Kataria’s charisma in Jhotwara Jaipur | News | Jaipur News

Jaipur: Congress candidate from Jhotwara constituency Abhishek Choudhary is trying hard to break the ice between his party and veteran Congress leader Lalchand Kataria. Leaders close to Choudhary had claimed that the state president of National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) had visited Kataria at least thrice in the last two weeks, but yet to convince the sitting MLA of the constituency.
“Kataria has huge influence and fan following in the Jhotwara constituency. He had been the former MP of Jaipur rural and had been a central minister as well. Choudhary knows it very well that Kataria can change the fate of results in favour or against Congress,” said a senior Congress leader of the constituency.
When TOI contacted Choudhary, he claimed that he is very much confident of winning the seat and become MLA for the first time. He claimed that he had started off his campaign meeting Kataria to seek his blessings and had met him whenever he is close to his residence on election campaign. “I don’t want to get into why Congress has not fielded Katariaji. I am just a foot soldier of Congress party. Being a student’s leader, it’s always good to respect, meet and seek advice from a leader of Katariaji’s stature. I am just doing that,” said Choudhary. Unlike any other heavyweights of Congress, who had lost tickets, Kataria still is an exception. Several banners of Congress in Jhotwara, including placards at the party offices, depicts photographs of Kataria alongside senior Congress leaders like Rahul Gandhi, Ashok Gehlot and the candidate himself.
“With Rajpal Singh Shekhawat withdrawing his candidature, anti-incumbency factor in the BJP camp had reduced to a great extent. Now, its time for Abhishek to secure the entire Congress vote bank of the constituency. He and Congress know it very well that Kataria can ensure these votes for or against Congress,” said another senior Congress leader.
Lalchand Kataria was unavailable for comment.
