Jaipur: For the first time, 350-odd Tibetan families living in the city, celebrated Dalai Lama’s Nobel Peace prize reception day on Sunday. Two different events were organised to mark the day. While the first one took place at the Shree Jhulelal Refugee Market in Mansarovar, the second one was celebrated on Sirsi Road.
“We are around 800 Tibetansof 155 families living in Jaipur. After we purchased stalls at the Jhulelal Market, we had started living in the city for most of the year. However, this year, we decided tocelebrate the day when our spiritual leader won the Nobel Peace prize,” said Lhamo, the chairman of Tibetan market committee in Jaipur. On Sunday, the Sree Jhulelal Refugee Market remained closed because of this event. Tibetan spiritual leader, the 14th Dalai Lama, had received the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo on December 10, 1989.
“We had organised cultural programmes including Tibetan dance and music along with arrangements for Tibetan foods as well. A few of our relatives and friends are expected to come from other cities as well,” said Tenzin Dakpa, a member of the Tibetan shopkeepers’ body in Bindyaka on Sirsi Road. In 2021 those who did purchase shops at Jhulelal Market, got shifted to this market. Around 20-25 Tibetans first came down to Jaipur in 1978 and till 2020 more than 800 Tibetans started selling winter garments from their makeshift stalls in Badi Chaupar and Choti Chaupar areas.

Dalai Lama embarks on Sikkim and West Bengal visit
The Dalai Lama’s visit to Sikkim and West Bengal for teachings has sparked diplomatic discussions on the border tension between India and China. He will be giving teachings on Gyalsey Thokme Sangpo’s 37 practices of a Boddhisattva and performing the Ceremony for Generation of Bodhicitta. The visit holds sentimental value for the Dalai Lama as he first arrived in Sikkim in 1956 and considers it an important state. It is worth noting that China recognizes Sikkim as a state of India, so there should be no reason for China to be annoyed.
