Depressed over divorce, man immolates himself in Rajasthan

JAIPUR: Depressed due to his divorce, a 23-year-old man, identified as Gaurav Gehlot, immolated himself at a cremation ground in Jhunjhunu district’s Navalgarh town on Monday night. Gaurav had a love marriage in 2021, which ended in divorce soon. This had deeply impacted his mental health, said police.
The partially charred remains of the victim were identified by a ring on his finger on Tuesday. He also left behind a suicide note.
A senior police official told TOI that a young man’s half-burnt body was found near Navalgarh police station at 9:30am on Tuesday. The police initially scanned CCTV footage of the surrounding areas but found no clues. However, after scanning CCTV cameras from a fire station near the crema torium, the team spotted a young man heading towards it at 10:30pm on Monday. “This footage was circulated on different platforms. When the footage reached Gaurav’s family, they contacted the police and identified the young man based on his clothes and finger ring.” The CCTV footage shows Gaurav with a can, hence, based on this, the police suspect that it was a petrol can.
Family members revealed that Gaurav had a love marriage two years ago in September 2021, which did not last for more than 5-7 days. The couple then headed for divorce. This depressed Gaurav and he became a recluse.
A police official said, “After identifying the body, we searched Gaurav’s room and found a suicide note where he had stated that as he did not want anyone to touch his dead body, he was immolating himself and held no one responsible for this act.” Gaurav had deleted his social media account before taking the extreme step.
