Discord is shutting down the Clyde AI chatbot

Discord has announced that it will be shutting down Clyde, its experimental AI chatbot, by the end of the month. According to a support note, users will no longer be able to invoke Clyde in DMs, Group DMs, or server chats from December 1.
Discord had been testing Clyde’s AI features earlier this year, which allowed the chatbot to answer questions and engage in conversations with users using OpenAI‘s models.Despite its limited testing, the company had intended to make it a fundamental part of its chat and communities app.
“Clyde will be deactivated at the end of the month. By December 1, 2023, users will no longer be able to invoke Clyde in DMs, Group DMs or server chats. Thank you for your support & feedback – we are constantly working on bringing you new features and experiences!,” reads the support page for Clyde.
Discord users can make use of Clyde, an AI chat integration that can be added to their server. Clyde is an experimental feature that offers users the ability to discover new things, such as knowledge, tips, and jokes. It also facilitates playing interactive games like trivia and provides recommendations regarding movies, books, and more. Essentially, Clyde enables users to express themselves and engage in discussions on various topics.
The reason behind the sudden shutdown of Clyde is unclear. The chatbot may return as a Nitro-only feature in the future, or perhaps Discord could have decided that an AI chatbot doesn’t need to be integrated into its service. Currently, there is no official statement from the company about Clyde’s shutdown.
Discord has been experimenting with various AI features, such as AI-generated conversation summaries, which allow users to catch up on conversations they may have missed, particularly useful for servers that span across multiple time zones. Additionally, Discord is positioning its platform as an AI developer’s home, offering funds and resources to help developers build AI apps for Discord.
