Garment Exporters Look For Ways To Make Business Carbon Neutral | Jaipur News

Jaipur: The European Union wants to become climate neutral by 2050. It also wants its suppliers to become environmentally sustainable and follow its green deal. The EU has already said firms not following sustainable standards will face carbon border tax (CBT) from 2026 and its initial list covers steel, aluminium, cement, fertiliser, hydrogen and electricity. But textiles and garments are set to come next.
Adopting sustainability practices and processes are no more a choice for the garment industry, said a senior official of Apparel Exports Promotion Council (AEPC), which is reaching out to manufacturers to map the existing sustainability status.
Tamanna Chatuurvedi, deputy secretary general of AEPC said, “Before the commitments come into force for textile and garmenting industry, the manufacturers have to ensure that value chains of their businesses confirm to the sustainability standards, in the absence of which it will be difficult for them to export to the EU countries.”
The council is holding roadshows across five prominent garment clusters that include Tirupur, Mumbai, Bangalore, Jaipur, and Delhi-NCR.
“Through the roadshows we want to map the existing sustainability status, give an opportunity to AEPC members to showcase their sustainability measures to iconic reputed brands, document the best stories to showcase them to the global buyers and brands, and have a policy dialogue with the government for suitable policy interventions for supporting MSMEs for better preparedness in the changing scenario,” said Chatuurvedi.
Members and representatives of the Garment Exporters Association of Rajasthan (GEAR) said that they need government intervention to source energy from green sources.
Zakir Hussain, president of GEAR, said, “Having business sustainability and environmental protection is difficult without the cooperation of the government. That’s why we have asked the government to set up a subsidy programme for rooftop solar projects and a garment recycling park in the state.”
