Holika Dahan: Greater’s Green Drive: Cow Dung Logs This Holika Dahan | Jaipur News

Jaipur: With the aim of saving trees, JMC-Greater on Tuesday started a campaign to use cow dung logs for Holika Dahan festivities.
Mayor Somya Gurjar said, “Holika Dahan happens in almost every locality in the city and in this, lots of trees are cut and burnt. With the aim of saving the environment with every small step, we had started preparations two month in advance and 400 quintals of cow dung logs have been prepared at Hingonia Gaushala. All cow dung logs will be given free of cost to residents.”
JMC-Greater has also issued helpline numbers, 9549010154 and 0141-2742181 where residents can call and place their orders for cow dung logs.
Meanwhile, indicating differences, Puneet Karnawat deputy mayor of JMC-Greater along with civil society members and traders’ body held a separate media briefing on the same issue.
Officials said for one bonfire that is burnt during such festivals, around two and half trees are cut to meet the requirements of wood, whereas cow dung logs are readily available in cow shelters across the state.
“We are starting a state-wide campaign with the help of cow shelters, traders’ associations, panchayat samitis so that more people start using cow dung logs instead of wood. In the past two years, the demand for cow dung logs increased from 750 orders to 2200 orders for Holika Dahan. This year, all the cow shelters together are ready to take over 3000 orders in Jaipur city. The campaign will be spread to other districts also with the help of Panchayat Samiti Rajasthan Sangh,” said the deputy mayor.
He further said that packets of cow dung logs that can be used by a community for the festivities have been priced at Rs 2100 and for use by small families, a packet costs Rs 50.
