India fighting ‘invisible enemy’ with all its might, says PM Narendra Modi on Covid challenge | India News

NEW DELHI: Calling the Covid-19 an “invisible enemy” that is challenging the world, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said his government was fighting this once in a century pandemic “with all its might” and ensuring that every government department was working day and night to ease the pain of the nation.
“As the Prime Minister of this country, I feel every loss my countrymen feel. India is not a nation that loses hope in tough times. I am sure that we will overcome this challenge with our strength and dedication,” he said after releasing the eighth instalment of financial benefit under the PM-Kisan scheme to over 9.5 crore farmers, including over 7.03 lakh from West Bengal.
Over Rs 20,667 crore was directly transferred to farmers’ bank accounts. Farmers of West Bengal received the assistance for the first time since the scheme was launched in February 2019. Two instalments of Rs 2,000 each, amounting to over Rs 281 crore, were released to the farmers of West Bengal in one go.
Under PM-Kisan, all landholder farmers’ families get Rs 6,000 each annually in three equal instalments. Though farmers of all states/UTs had been getting the amount since 2019 as their respective governments did then join the scheme, the West Bengal government didn’t do it. The state had joined the scheme only days ahead of the recently held assembly elections. Remaining armers of the state will also get the benefit under PM-Kisan in due course once the West Bengal government shares their verified details with the agriculture ministry.
Underlining that the Covid-19 is now spreading in rural areas as well, PM Modi while addressing the farmers urged the village panchayats to ensure proper awareness and sanitation in their respective areas.
Requesting everyone to go for vaccination, he said, “The Centre along with state governments is ensuring that the Covid vaccines reach citizens as quickly as possible. We are driving the largest vaccination drive.”
One way of defeating the virus is by taking the Covid vaccine. Over 18 crore people have already been vaccinated so far, the PM added.
He also requested state governments to ensure strict laws to counter black marketing of medicines and medical supplies. “The government is dedicated to making Covid hospitals and Covid care centres, oxygen plants are being set up with the latest technology. Armed forces are working with full strength to ensure oxygen supply in these tough times”, he said.
