Disasters inflicted deep wounds on the Himalayan communities: Youth for Himalaya
The continuous destruction in Himalayan states has caused widespread distress and uncertainty for mountain communities. The Youth for Himalaya organization highlights the series of crises that have affected the region throughout the year, including land subsidence, monsoon destruction, and glacial outbursts. The destruction has not only affected the Himalayan regions but also the fertile plains and footholds of the Himalayas. The government’s response to these crises has been negligible and apathetic, with no long-term strategy in place. The recent glacial outburst in Sikkim has highlighted the resistance of groups like the Affected Citizens of Teesta against large dams and concretization of rivers. The government’s negligence in heeding early warnings and lack of flood warning systems has contributed to the devastation. The disasters in the Himalayan states are seen as state-led development disasters, with the central government ignoring the severity of the situation and failing to provide timely relief and support. The Youth for Himalaya organization calls for urgent air support, declaration of the devastation as a national disaster, relief packages, prevention of water-borne diseases, independent inquiries into safety systems, and halting of dam and hydro power projects in the region.

The attacks have taken place in various parts of the country, with some incidents involving the police. The Jamaat-e-Ahmadiyya Pakistan has accused the authorities of doing nothing to protect the community, while the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan has called for accountability and the repair of damaged sites.
