Lungs Transplant Facilities: Lungs Transplant Facilities Needed To Prevent Wastage | Jaipur News

Jaipur: Of the 54 cadaveric organ donations from braindead people conducted in the state since 2015, it is mostly kidneys that have been utilised in the hospitals in Jaipur. There have been a few cases of liver and heart transplants in the city. But out of the 54 cadaveric organ donations, only two lungs were retrieved—mainly because of the unavailability of transplant facilities and lack of demand.
Rajasthan State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO) keeps searching for recipients of lungs across the country. SOTTO managed to utilise the two lungs harvested from braindead patients in Rajasthan by sending them to south India as lung transplant facilities are available there.
In February 2021, the heart and lungs harvested from a 14-year-old boy from Bassi near Jaipur were flown to Chennai for transplantation. They were transplanted into a 46-year-old woman undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Chennai.
On Thursday, a 45-year-old woman, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, admitted to a private hospital in Secunderabad, received the lungs harvested from a braindead 28-year-old man from Alwar district.
“In the state, only two hospitals are approved for lung transplant – the government-run SMS Hospital and the private Mahatma Gandhi hospital. Lungs transplant programmes need to take off in the state,” said Dr Manish Sharma, a consultant with SOTTO.
MOHAN Foundation Jaipur Citizen Forum (MFJCF), an NGO working for encouraging organ donation, pointed out that there is a need to develop more facilities for lungs transplant not only in the state but also across the country.
“In diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cystic fibrosis, pulmonary fibrosis (scarring of the lungs), pulmonary hypertension and Covid, patients need lungs transplant. Just like kidneys, lungs harvested from braindead patients should also be utilised to save the lives of needy patients. Just two lungs have been harvested and utilised out of the 54 organ donations from braindead patients in Rajasthan till now,” said MFJCF director Govind Gurbani.
