Madhya Pradesh: Cracks in Mandla dam, locals shifted to safety | Bhopal News

JABALPUR: A dam built to store rainwater developed cracks in Mandla district.
Officials shifted locals, who were residing nearby, to safety.
The dam is situated in Barwani village under Ghughri tehsil of Mandla district.
“There is a water body in Barwani village under Ghughri tehsil, where there is a minor water storage tank. We had received information of cracks there. Our teams were there in the night itself,” district collector Mandla Harshita Singh told TOI.
“I also visited the spot in the morning. There are two panchayats that are below the tank, Barwani and Patan. There were around 50 families that were suspected to be affected in case of any breach. These families have been shifted to other places, their cattle are also being shifted,” she said.
“The dam was filled to the brim, water was diverted by making alternate canals. Officials of the water resources department have also started maintenance works,” she added. “There were some leakages from the cracks when we had visited in the morning. But some water was drained out by building alternate channels. Now the leakage has been largely plugged,” Singh said.
“As per the information provided by WRD, the closure of this dam was done in 2019. But after the closure, it is checked for different levels in the next few years. This year, it was up to the brim. The total water storage capacity of the dam is 2.38 million cubic metres. A team of WCD from state capital has also reached here,” she added.
