JAIPUR: With 2,576 votes for the post of president, Niharika Jorwal who contested independently after breaking away from NSUI, got the second highest votes in Rajasthan University Student Union elections.
Jorwal is the daughter of Congress leader and sitting state government minister Murari Lal Meena who has independent charge for agriculture marketing, estate, tourism and civil aviation.
Jorwal decided to contest the elections independently after she was not given a ticket for the post of president by NSUI, and she did not want to contest the election on any other post.
The NSUI on Friday expelled her from the student union for six years.
Despite contesting independently, Jorwal got 566 more votes than Ritu Barala NSUI candidate for the post of president who had 2,010 votes. Her candidacy along with support from other independent candidates like Lokendra Singh Raythaliya, who could not contest the election due to being over age; made sure that Jorwal was also ahead of ABVP candidate Narendra Yadav who got only 988 votes.
After the election results, the supporting team of Jorwal issued a statement on social media saying that the “results are paramount, and it is accepted to us.”
Jorwal also issued a video on Saturday evening alleging that the counting was rigged. She said, “I thank all of you for all the support that you have shown, but I was running equal to Nirmal during the whole process of counting of votes, but I am not able to understand how was it that in the last two boxes all voters were for Nirmal, it seems like the counting was rigged. Media was also not allowed to enter the counting area and neither were we allowed to take a slip pad and pen. Officials who did not have duty in counting were also present in the room.”
During the campaigning process, Jorwal raised the issue of how being a minister’s daughter has been difficult for her as “people only look at that and not my struggle and the work that I have done for students.”
Meanwhile, in a video being shared on social media on Saturday shows, Naresh Meena, a former president of RUSU alleged that Jorwal and her team had given him Rs 10 lakh to manage the expenses of the elections and that he was going to return Rs 5 lakh to the minister.
