Jaipur: With assembly elections in five states, including Rajasthan, coming to an end Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday issued an order to lift the model code of conduct (MCC) with immediate effect. The Election Commission of India lifted the model code of conduct after the assembly elections in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Telangana, and Mizoram concluded. The Congress won in Telangana, while the Bharatiya Janata Party emerged victorious in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh. The Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) won in Mizoram. ECI suspends Telangana DGP for violating Model Code of Conduct
Telangana Director General of Police AnjKumar was suspended by the Election Commission of India for violating the Model Code of Conduct. The suspension came after the top cop met with Telangana Congress president Revanth Reddy. The Director General of Police of Telangana, along with two other senior police officers, visited the candidate’s residence while the counting process was still underway. This action was seen as a clear indication of seeking favor and a misconduct that sets a wrong precedent. The Election Commission has also sought an explanation from two other officials who met with Revanth Reddy.
Mizoram elects a record three women to state assembly
Lalrinpuii and Baryl Vanneihsangi, from Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), and Pravo Chakma, from Mizo National Front (MNF), became the first women MLAs in Mizoram. Lalrinpuii won from Lunglei East, Vanneihsangi from Aizawl South-3, and Pravo from West Tuipui. The first woman elected to the legislature was L Thanmawii of People’s Conference (PC) in 1978. She was followed by K Thansiami of PC in 1984 and Lalhlimpuii of MNF. Lalhlimpuii became the first woman minister in 1987. Vanlalawmpuii Chawngthu was elected in 2014 and served as a junior minister in the Congress government under Lal Thanhawla.
