Nurses’ protest hits services at SMS hospital | Jaipur News

JAIPUR: The protest of nursing staff wreaked havoc on the medical services on Friday. The Sawai Man Singh Hospital (SMS) appeared to be grappling with healthcare facilities as around 70% of the staff were off duty.
Gaurav Meena, whose father is admitted to one of the ICU wards of the facility, said that he had to do the duties that are usually done by the nurses. “In the morning, one doctor came and guided me on how to look after my father for the day. Since then, I have been sitting next to him as no one is there to check on him,” Gaurav said.
In a patient-packed general ward, Nirmal Devi claimed that she couldn’t find anyone to help her with giving medicines to her ailing husband. “Yesterday, there were people who helped me sort out his medicines and change his catheter, but today no one is there. I am not an expert in all these matters,” she noted.
A visit to the hospital found that the majority of the wards had no attendants to address issues of kin. The resident doctors worked extra hours to manage the patient rush.
“The resident doctors had to do the duties of nursing staff today (Friday). Usually the nurses provide medicines to the patients who had their surgeries, but it is the RDs who are looking after it. The number of surgeries conducted today was also lower,” said one of the senior resident doctors from the hospital.
But, at the hospital’s emergency department, patient care remained largely unaffected, thanks to the dedicated presence of both Covid Health Assistants (CHAs) and permanent nursing staff recruited through RPSC in 2009 and 2011.
The nursing staff and doctors skillfully administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to an unconscious patient suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Doctors intubated patient Kailash after CPR and sent him to ICU for treatment.
