On-Device AI: Qualcomm launches Snapdragon X Elite CPUs for PCs, rivals Apple’s M series chipsets
Last year, Qualcomm showcased its Oryon CPU during the Snapdragon Summit. The CPU was aimed at offering best possible computing performance for PCs. The company has finally introduced its new computing processor — the Snapdragon X Elite with the all-new Oryon CPU.
The new computing processor from the company comes with on-device AI inference and is also said to be the most efficient processors for PCs with multiple days of battery life. The company claims that the Snapdragon X Elite is designed to support the intelligent and power-intensive tasks that will enable powerful productivity, rich creativity and immersive entertainment experiences on the go.
“Snapdragon X Elite represents a dramatic leap in innovation for computing as we deliver our new, custom Qualcomm Oryon CPU for super-charged performance that will delight consumers with incredible power efficiency and take their creativity and productivity to the next level,” said Kedar Kondap, Senior Vice President & General Manager of Compute & Gaming, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.
Snapdragon X: Features
Snapdragon X Elite is based on 4nm System-on-a-Chip architecture featuring 12-cores Qualcomm Oryon CPUs where all 12 of them are clocked at 3.8GHz with dual-core boost of up to 4.3GHz. It supports LPDDR5x memory with 136GB/s memory bandwidth and 42MB of total cache.
The company claims that the chip offers around 2x faster CPU performance compared to a 10-core laptop CPU and consumes just one third of the power. It also comes with Adreno GPU for graphics processing.
Qualcomm has also included its best AI feature as well. It comes with the Qualcomm AI Engine with integrated Qualcomm Hexagon NPU which enables it to run generative AI LLM models with over 12 billion parametres on-device. The processor also comes with a micro NPU inside the Qualcomm Sensing Hub for enhanced security, login experience and privacy including the ability to wake up the devices when in sleep mode.
Snapdragon X Elite is also backed by intelligent security features that help protect your PC from chip to cloud, including the Qualcomm Secure Processing Unit running Microsoft Pluton
TPM, total memory encryption and Microsoft Secured-core PC support.
Qualcomm AI Engine supports Windows Studio Effects and many other AI-accelerated applications and experiences. The processor also comes with a built-in 5G modem and it supports Wi-Fi 7 with HBS multi-link for seamless connectivity. Snapdragon Seamless allows users to easily switch between your favorite devices for smooth and dynamic experiences.
