JAIPUR: As the Rajasthan University prepares for the admission season, officials said that courses like sociology, history, English, political science and economics, are still the most preferred courses by students for undergraduation.
“Many students have already studied these subjects during their high school years, which explains their familiarity and preference for them at the undergraduate level. Moreover, these subjects play a quintessential role in various competitive examinations like UPSC, which students often plan to give immediately after graduation,” said Rashmi Jain, head of sociology department, University of Rajasthan. She further said that these subjects help students to delve beyond surface realities and comprehend the underlying circumstances in society.
The faculties of these departments use a practical approach to teaching.
“The sociology department, for instance, approaches an audio-visual technique to help students understand and analyse films from a social perspective. The School of Social Sciences is also planning to introduce research skills in their theory papers. To enrich student’s exposure to knowledge, each department invites numerous qualified guest lecturers,” she added.
Officials also said that the department of political science has an extensive network of guest faculties, whereas the department of economics relies more on its permanent staff, organising a guest lecture every once in a while which helps students.
“The scope of studying these subjects is vast, particularly in research-oriented fields. The development sector also presents numerous opportunities for professionals skilled in these disciplines. Public sector jobs, social profiling, and prison welfare offices are just a few opportunities to name open to social science students,” said a senior official from the admissions department at the university.
The official added, “ Furthermore, an understanding of these subjects is highly relevant in fields such as law and architecture.”
