A three day conference, the inaugural event saw health experts from around the world shedding light on the efficacy and advancements made in the field of liver transplants.India, as a country, tops in the category as the living donor liver transplantation whereas in the western countries, it is thecadaver donation that is more in number. Emphasising on encouraging more of cadaver donations, Professor Mohamed Rela, Chairman and Director, Rela Hospitals, Chennai said that government needs to provide more support to encourage organ donations. “When a healthy person dies, one is capable of donating seven organs that can save life of so many other people. But the number of such donations are very less in India. This is also because government has not been promoting much. Government needs to come up with schemes and ideas such as providing future healthcare free or some compensation to families who donate organs,” he added.

A study has found that more women tend to donate organs while more men are likely to be recipients. This can be attributed to financial responsibilities on men and cultural expectations of women to take care of their families. The data collected from government hospitals showed that over 90% of live donors and spousal donors are wives, while only 10% are husbands. Additionally, female recipients are fewer compared to male recipients. Female literacy and social structure play a role in these trends. The study suggests promoting organ donation through social media and government programs to reduce the gender disparity.

A baby from Odisha successfully underwent a liver transplant at MGM Healthcare in Chennai after being diagnosed with liver cancer and a rare congenital condition called Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome. The child’s parents volunteered to donate a part of their liver, but were found unsuitable. However, a successful swap with another donor was made possible, although the transplant was challenging due to the size of the donor liver.
