JAIPUR: Six candidates from erstwhile royal families in Rajasthan, who tried their luck in the assembly elections performed well. Five candidates fielded by the Bharatiya Janata Party emerged victorious, while Congress‘ Vishvendra Singh from erstwhile Bharatpur royal family lost the polls.
While royal families lost their titles after Independence, they continue to remain popular among the public and their influence is steady among the members of upper castes in the state, especially Brahmins and Rajputs.
