Jaisalmer: The Jaisalmer Pollution Control Board has served a notice imposing a penalty of Rs 3.67 crore on Focus Energy, an oil and gas company operating near the Indo-Pak border.
This penalty has been imposed for allegedly operating a gas gathering plant without the required renewal for approximately 1,752 days. The company has until November 9, to respond to the notice.
Rajasthan state pollution control board’s regional manager in Jaisalmer, Jagdish Choudhary said the company is known for producing 0.95 million standard cubic meters of gas.
“To operate such facilities, companies are required to obtain permission under the Air Act and Water Act, which involve the processing and disposal of hazardous substances,” said Choudhary.
Choudhary said that Focus Energy received a valid permission letter for its operations from November 29, 2016, to April 30, 2018.
“The company, however, failed to apply for any renewal after May 1, 2018. Only on February 16, 2023, did the company finally apply for a renewal of the unit’s operation. This means the company continued to operate its gas gathering plant without renewal from May 2018 to February 15, 2023, in direct violation of guidelines and orders issued by the Supreme Court and the National Green Tribunal,” Rajasthan state pollution control board’s regional manager in Jaisalmer said.

Mumbai Air Pollution: With air quality worsening, MPCB cracks whip on polluting companies
The Maharashtra State Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has taken action against companies for not curbing pollution in Mumbai. The MPCB seized a bank guarantee from Aegis Logistics and Sea Lord Containers and issued showcause notices to Hindustan Petroleum and Tata Power. The board has also ordered a survey of ready-mix plants and imposed a ban on open burning of trash. The MPCB has directed transport authorities to not allow heavy vehicles older than eight years into the city. The board has also recommended repairing or replacing air quality monitoring stations.

More than 100 CEOs and senior executives from the World Economic Forum’s Alliance of CEO Climate Leaders, including several from India, have signed an open letter urging governments to increase investments in renewable energy and implement policies to reduce emissions in global supply chains. They also called on fellow business leaders to accelerate net-zero actions, set science-based targets, and disclose emissions. The Alliance represents $4 trillion in revenues and 12 million employees, equivalent to the emissions of the US. They emphasized the need for public-private collaboration to achieve the necessary emissions reductions by 2030.
