Protests erupt outside Jama Masjid demanding Nupur Sharma’s arrest
Protests erupted outside Jama Masjid after Friday prayers with hundreds of people demanding the arrest of Nupur Sharma for her controversial remarks on Prophet Mohammad.
A large crowd of people could be seen gathering at the steps of the mosque, some carrying placards and shouting slogans against Sharma.
A senior police officer said that while some of the demonstrators left the site after some time, others continued to protest.

Miscreants hang effigy of Nupur Sharma in Belagavi
Miscreants hanged an effigy of suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma from an electric wire resembling a public execution near a mosque on Fort Road, police said.
As the issue triggered a public outrage, police along with the city municipal corporation removed it quickly, they added.
The police have registered a case against unknown miscreants for spreading enmity between communities and disturbing peace in society.
Protests erupt in Karnataka’s Kalaburgi
Members of a Mumbai-based Islamic organisation, Raza Academy, on Friday staged a demonstration at Muslim Chowk in Kalaburagi against the controversial remarks of Nupur Sharma.
Sporadic incidents of sloganeering in Uttar Pradesh
Sporadic incidents of sloganeering were also reported from Prayagraj and Saharanpur. However, police said no untoward incident was reported in any part of the state.

Similar scenes were reported from Moradabad and Lucknow. In Lucknow, thousands of protesters at the Tile Wali Masjid were prevented by the police from crossing the barricades.
Additional Director General (Law and order) Prashant Kumar said the situation adequate forces had been deployed to ensure peace.
Earlier, elaborate security arrangements were been made across Kanpur ahead of Friday prayers and Section 144 of CrPC, which restricts assembly of more than four persons, has been imposed.
Muslims protest in Ahmedabad, Vadodara
Demanding immediate arrest of Nupur Sharma over her remarks, members of the Muslim community held protests in some areas of Gujarat’s Ahmedabad and Vadodara.
Shops and markets in Muslim-dominated Dariyapur and Karanj areas here remained shut as part of the protest. In Dariyapur, several Muslim men and teenagers gathered on a main road with placards proclaiming love for Prophet Mohammad and demanding the arrest of Sharma.
Curfew in tense Doda, Kishtwar districts; Internet suspended in parts of Kashmir
Tension mounted in the Doda and Kishtwar areas of the Jammu region prompting authorities to impose a curfew there while parts of Kashmir observed a shutdown over the controversial remarks by two now-suspended BJP leaders against Prophet Mohammad, officials said on Friday.
Internet services were snapped in the Bhaderwah and Kishtwar towns as a precautionary measure. Mobile Internet was also suspended in parts of Kashmir, they said.
In Kashmir, security forces have been deployed in strength at sensitive places of Srinagar and elsewhere in the Valley for maintaining law and order.
Locals protest in West Bengal’s Howrah
Locals in Howrah on Thursday protested against the controversial statement of suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma. The protests took place near Ankurhati on NH 116, disrupting traffic.
A few protesters who were present on the site shouted slogans that Nupur should be given harshest punishment.
Howrah City Police DCP South Pratiksha tried to quell the protests but the efforts did not yield results. Traffic has been affected in Howrah city due to the jam, due to which traffic has been diverted in many areas.
Police had to baton-charge to disperse the crowd at Dhulagarh and Panchla, where the demonstrators pelted stones in retaliation, causing damage to nearby cars.
The protesters also blocked railway tracks between Fuleswar and Chengail stations in the Howrah-Kharagpur section from 1.22 pm, a South Eastern Railway official said.
This comes after West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday hit out at Nupur Sharma and expelled leader Naveen Kumar Jindal.
The BJP on June 5 suspended Sharma and expelled its Delhi unit media head Naveen Kumar Jindal as the row over their alleged derogatory remarks against Prophet Mohammad escalated with protests from some Muslim countries.
Delhi Police had provided security to Sharma and her family after an FIR was registered on a complaint that she was getting death threats over her controversial remarks on Prophet Mohammad. She had requested the police to provide security citing harassment and threats she had been receiving.
