BIKANER: Sriganganagar police arrested 13 farmers, including two farmer leaders, for allegedly blocking the then chief minister Vasundhra Raje’s convoy and waving black flags three years ago on Tuesday.
The farmers had held a protest demanding water for irrigation, among others, in the three-year-old case. The accused were produced before the ACJM court in Padampur and remanded in judicial custody. The farmers claimed that they had voluntarily courted arrest at the police station.
Padampur station SHO Ramkesh Meena said 13 farmers were booked on charges of allegedly breaching z-plus security, obstructing public servant from discharging duties, and carrying out a murderous attack during the Gaurav Yatra of former CM Raje. The complaint was filed on September 7, 2018.
A case was registered under sections 307 (murder attempt), 147 (rioting), 149 (unlawful assembly), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to public servant in the discharge of duty), among others. Six farmers were arrested next day. Raje had come to Sriganganagar as part of Gaurav Yatra in 2018. The farmers held a protest demanding the reconstruction of Firojpur feeder in Ganganagar. They wanted to meet Raje, but she left without meeting them. When she reached the canal area in Padampur, the farmers waved black flags, resulting in a clash with the police.
