Quality Of Life: 60l Illegal Prescription Drugs Seized Since 2019 | Jaipur News
Jaipur: After nearly three years of relentless efforts by the Jaipur police to combat narcotics smuggling, investigators have unearthed a distressing reality of extensive drug abuse within the city.
Since 2019, a total of 59,69,932 tablets and capsules, including Tramadol, Alprazolam, and Pentazocinlacte injections, have been seized.
Police initiated ‘Operation Clean Sweep’ in October 2019 with the aim of eradicating narcotics trade in Jaipur. So far, 2159 drug peddlers have been arrested. What has been particularly alarming is the prevalence of prescription drugs among the substance abuse. Traditionally, law enforcement agencies focus on intercepting illicit narcotics like opium, heroin, cocaine, and other banned substances.
While these substances remain a concern, the discovery of widely abused prescription medications has added a new dimension to the city’s drug problem.
Tramadol, a powerful painkiller, and Alprazolam, commonly used to treat anxiety and panic disorders, are both substances that are legitimately used in medical contexts. Tramadol, when misused, can lead to dependence on it and severe health consequences. Alprazolam, when not taken under medical supervision, can be habit-forming and dangerous.
The Jaipur police’s task of exposing drug network is an ongoing one. Besides these substances, they have also launched a crackdown on Codeine Phosphate and Relaxcof syrups – used as substitutes for many drugs. So far, a total of 1,769 bottles of such syrups have been seized. Other drugs seized in the operation include 21,737 capsules of Dicyclomine Hydrochloride, used to treat a certain type of intestinal problem, over 89,000 tablets of Nitrazepam, and 1,716 capsules of Proxywel Spas.
Police continue their efforts against the illegal narcotics trade, as ‘Operation Clean Sweep’, which started in 2019, aims to strike at the heart of the drug trafficking trade that affects the city’s youths and families.
