Raj Approves Five Major Water Projects For Jjm Connections | Jaipur News

Jaipur: Considering the groundwater conditions in the state, the Rajasthan Government has given an approval of Rs 22.854 crore to implement five major surface water projects.
These projects would help to give tap water connections to 15 lakhs households in 5,739 villages under the Union government’s Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM).
The approval has been given at the 37th meeting of the State Level Project Sanctioning Committee (SLSSC) held on Tuesday under the chairmanship of additional chief secretary, Public Health Engineering and Ground Water, Subodh Agrawal.
“All these are major surface water projects. In most blocks of Rajasthan, groundwater is in bad shape owing to over exploitations. If we would have provided groundwater-based connections under the JJM, the connections would have sustained barely for five years. This is the reason why JJM connections in Rajasthan is costliest compared to any other states and time consuming,” Dinesh Goyel, chief engineer (technical, JJM), told TOI.
Officials stated, if everything works fine and according to plan, it will take at least 30 to 36 months to complete all these projects.
“Meanwhile, we would provide interim connections to the beneficiaries of these projects through ground water. Once these projects are completed, we are going to switch the connections with surface water,” added Goyel.
For all these years, the villagers of these 5,739 villages used to rely on groundwater based tubewells, wells or handpumps.
These projects include Rs 7934 crore Sikar-Jhunjhunu project. Around 1,133 villages of these two districts would get supply from the Indira Gandhi Canal Project under this project.
Then, there is the Chambal-Alwar-Bharatpur project. Under this project, 1,572 villages of Alwar and Bharatpur districts would be connected with the Chambal River – one of the major water sources of the state.
The government had also sanctioned the Jakham Dam based project.
