Jaipur: Starting June 1, citizens will receive 100 units of electricity free of cost, an initiative announced by CM Ashok Gehlot in the state Budget. Distribution companies are now getting ready to implement the scheme by updating their billing software, among others.
According to Discom records, a total of 1.04 crore consumers will benefit from the scheme with their electricity bills reduced to zero. All consumers must register at the inflation relief camp to be eligible for the scheme.
“The total number of domestic electricity consumers in the state is 1.24 crore. Among them, there are 1.04 crore consumers who use less than 100 units of electricity per month,” a senior official said.
“The total number of domestic electricity consumers in the state is 1.24 crore. Among them, there are 1.04 crore consumers who use less than 100 units of electricity per month. Currently, more than 76 lakh consumers have registered themselves at the inflation relief camps to avail a free electricity of up to 100 units. Those who consume more than 100 units will continue to receive the fixed subsidy from the government as they did previously. These consumers do not need to register themselves,” a senior official said.
Consumers with multiple connections will also be eligible for free power. “If a user has more than one connection, the benefit will be granted based on the number of individuals registered in Jan Aadhaar cards of a family. If a family consists of three members, each of them can avail of the benefit on their respective connections,” said the official.
Sample readings from those who consume 90 to 100 units of electricity will be examined to determine eligibility and prevent misuse of the scheme. “Instructions have been issued to officials to prevent misuse and power theft. They will check if electricity meters have been tampered with to avail the benefit,” the official said.
The welfare scheme will cost the government about Rs 5,200 crore from subsidising those consuming 100 units per month, and an additional Rs 1,800 crore for giving relief to the remaining 20 lakh domestic users annually. The total burden on the government is estimated to be Rs 7,000 crore.
