Rajasthan: BJP leaders heading to CM’s residence detained | Jaipur News

JAIPUR: Police on Saturday resorted to water cannons and mild lathi-charge to prevent BJP leaders and activists from marching towards chief minister’s residence. They were protesting exam paper leaks, deteriorating law and order and unemployment in the state.
Senior leaders, including BJP state president Satish Poonia, party in-charge Arun Singh, deputy leader of Opposition Rajendra Rathore and Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) state president Himanshu Sharma were detained when they tried to cross barricading at the Civil Lines Phatak. No one was reportedly injured in the struggle between the police and the party workers.
The party leaders said that 30 MLAs along with eight MPs attended the protest. Many among them later left for Churu to join former CM Vasundhara Raje at her birthday celebrations.
BJP party workers from across the state gathered at the BJP state headquarters from wee hours holding party flags, banners and posters. At noon when the crowd swelled to thousands, the senior party leaders including Poonia, Singh, Rathore and BJYM president Himanshu Sharma addressed them. They urged the people to take forward the message of injustices to the state youth in their respective areas.
Anticipating a struggle, heavy police cover was in place along with water cannons and anti-riot vehicles at Civil Lines Phatak. The protest march at 1pm started proceeding towards Civil Lines.
The party workers lifted Poonia and Sharma on their shoulders and forcibly attempted to cross the Civil Lines Phatak.
“The crowd was swelling and showing aggression which left us with no choice but to use water cannons. Thereafter, senior leaders were detained and taken to Vidhyadhar Nagar police station and later released,” said a police officer present on the ground.
Himanshu Sharma told TOI, “The Congress government did all it can to crush the protest by first cancelling the state Assembly session and since morning creating an obstruction for our party workers entering the city from different routes. But still, we have given a stern message to the government that we will fight till the government delivers justice to lakhs of students/candidates who had suffered due to organised paper leaks.”
BJP leaders burnt the memorandum which they had intended to hand to Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot.
