Jaipur: Rajasthan won the battle but lost the war as they failed to qualify for the knock-out phase of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 cricket tournament on Friday.
In their sixth and final league Group D match in Mullanpur against Maharashtra, Rajasthan recorded a thumping 53-run victory to finish with 14 points. Vidarbha and Bengal made the cut for the knockouts with 16 points each.
It was so near yet so far for Rajasthan. They would have advanced but their first match against the weakest team in the seven-member group Pondicherry was washed out because of rain in Mohali. Against Maharashtra, Rajasthan came up with a brilliant performance and dominated the match from the word go.
Maharashtra were restricted to just 128 for 9 in reply to Rajasthan’s strong total of 181 for 4. Rajasthan captain Deepak Hooda’s decision to bat was justified by the top-order batters as they hammered rival bowlers to all parts of the ground. Openers Abhijeet Tomar (54: 45b, 2×4, 3×6) and Salman Khan (32: 23b, 4×4, 1×6) provided a flying start which was capitalised by Hooda himself with a quick-fire 37 off just 23 balls which included three towering sixes. The innings was given a perfect finish by Mahipal Lomror. The flamboyant batter piled up runs with a strike rate of over 217 and remained unbeaten on 50 inclusive of three fours and equal number of sixes.
The Maharashtra team lost the battle quite early when their star batter and last-match centurion Ruturaj Gaikwad and skipper Kedar Jadhav returned to the pavilion inside three overs.
Rajasthan pacers Khaleel Ahmed and Deepak Chahar did the early damage by scalping the five of the top six wickets. Later, spinners Manav Suthar, Rahul Chahar and Arafat Khan bowled tidily to help Rajasthan register a big win.
Mumbai, Baroda advance from Group A:
Meanwhile in Jaipur, J & K stunned Chhattisgarh by 35 runs to sign off their campaign in style. In the other Group A matches on the final day of the competition, Hyderabad defeated Haryana by 5 wickets, Mumbai thrashed Mizoram by nine wickets, while Baroda steamrolled Mizoram.
