Rajasthan: Rajeevika Promotes Bio-fortified Variety Of Millets In State | Jaipur News

Jaipur: Rajeevika (Rajasthan Grameen Aajeevika Vikas Parishad), in convergence with the department of agriculture and the universities of agricultural sciences, has adopted various advanced technologies for cultivation of millets.
It has been recommended that Dhan Shakti, a bio fortified variety of millet developed by International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), Hyderabad, the first variety to be enriched with minerals, will be cultivated and promoted in Rajasthan.
“Rajeevika promotes cultivation and consumption of the bio-fortified variety of millet through self-help groups (SHGs) with a view to control anaemia among women and children. The bio fortified variety consists of 71 mg per kg of iron and 40 mg per kg of zinc, which is twice as compared to normal varieties,” said Gajendra Kumar Sharma, state project manager (agri), Rajeevika.
“The interventions like improvement in crop production and variety, potential seed banks; crop feasibility analysis, farmers field value chain development, are being carried out in the state for the promotion of millets,” he said.
“Rajeevika is providing technical and financial support to farmers through FPOs and associated self-help groups (SHGs) where millets are promoted. It helps in enhancing economic opportunities and empowering rural poor with focus on women and marginalised groups in Rajasthan,” Sharma said. tnn
