JAIPUR: It is tough time for Rajasthani students, who are stuck in Sumy in Ukraine and waiting for Indian government for evacuation, as ration supply has dried up.
Dushyant Siraw, a student from Churu district studying in Sumy State Medical University, said that the remaining food stock finished on Tuesday night and they spent the entire Wednesday surviving on biscuits and bread.
“We are living in the university hostel and they should provide us food but the shops in the city have no ration. Shops are empty as people have hoarded most of the ration as roads are blocked. We cannot go out because of the continuous shelling and firing all around us. We just want to go home,” said Dushyant.
Unlike Kharkiv, Sumy railway and bus transit is blocked leaving students little option to travel out of the city. The nearest border is Russian which has intensified the shelling.
It is not possible for students to leave for Western Ukraine which is 1200-km away.
Around 5.30am, the entire hostel woke up by the sound of a bomb blast near their hostel.
Pankaj Bhamu from Sikar district said that they have made calls to the Indian embassy and just want students to cross the Ukrainian border somehow.
“There is a big line in front of medical stores of the city because people are being wounded. Locals have been given arms by their government and they are fighting the war. It is such a tricky situation, and we are spending our nights in bomb shelters,” said Pankaj.
According to reports, some time was given to Indian students by Russia to evacuate the Kharkiv city and students have been advised to leave Kharkiv either by train or just start walking as soon as possible. Dhiraj Srivastav, coordinator of Rajasthan who is in touch with the central government regarding the evacuation of Indian citizen, said, “We are in touch with the students of Sumy and Kharkiv. In Kharkiv as per the advisory of the government almost all students have left. In Sumy, students will soon be evacuated. Around 150 students of Rajasthan are in safe zone in Ukraine and rest are in touch. ”
Many students who are touch with TOI were at the Poland or Hungary borders or already in shelter homes of neighbouring countries. They are expected to arrive in India within a few days.
