Record Break: We Are Happy Satwik-chirag Break Our Old Record, Says Gandhe And D’sa | Jaipur News

Jaipur: Veteran shuttlers Pradeep Gandhe and Leroy D’sa are delighted that their old record was finally broken by Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty by entering the men’s doubles final of the Asian Games in Hangzhou on Friday.
Gandhe and D’sa were the first Indian pair to claim a bronze medal at the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi.
On Thursday, in-form Indian duo first equaled Gandhe-D’Sa’s 41-year-old record and a day later, they created history by becoming the first Indian men’s doubles combination to reach the final.
The world No. 3 Chirag-Satwik stunned their nemesis Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik of Malaysia 21-17, 21-12 in the semis. “Satwik-Chirag are in top form. I am very happy for them and hope they go on to take the gold medal. I firmly believe that they are fully capable of doing so and I will be rooting for them, fingers crossed,” D’sa told TOI from Mumbai.
D’sa’s partner Gandhe echoed his views and said records are meant to be broken otherwise it will not reflect the game’s progress.
“I am so happy for Satwik-Chirag. They really made the country proud by storming into the final. The way they are playing now, I am sure our boys will bring home the coveted gold medal tomorrow. They are oozing with confidence after beating their nemesis Malaysian pair today,” said Gandhe.
Satwik-Chirag will now face Korea’s Choi Soi Gyu and Kim Won Ho for the gold medal on Saturday.
Gandhe and D’sa were stopped by the eventual champions Indonesians in the 1982 Asiad. “It was a dream tournament for us. We not only won the individual men’s doubles bronze but also helped India capture the bronze in the team championship in the absence of great Prakash Padukone. Prakash was declared ‘professional’ and was not allowed to play at the 1982 Asian Games. Despite the last-minute shock, we managed to reach the semi-finals,” recalled Gandhe.
Gandhe was also part of the bronze-medal winning Thomas Cup team in 1979 where India lost to Denmark in the semis.
