Soldiers Killed: 2 Captains among 4 soldiers killed in Rajouri shootout | India News
JAMMU: Two Captains and at least two soldiers were killed, while a Major and a jawan suffered gunshot wounds in an ongoing anti-terrorism operation by combined forces of the Army, paramilitary and J&K police in Rajouri district of Jammu division on Wednesday, official sources said. They revealed that a terrorist was shot dead and his associates have been surrounded, with security forces maintaining a strict cordon to plug all escape routes.
The troops were fired upon by terrorists during a search in the thickly forested Kalakote area, resulting in casualties. The Army’s White Knight Corps spokesperson acknowledged the deaths, saying they were killed while “trying to prevent collateral damage to women and children”.
At the time of filing this report, official sources confirmed the death of two Captains — one from 63 Rashtriya Rifles and another from 9 Para (Special Forces) — as well as a Havildar from 9 Para (SF). The sources reported another soldier’s death, but couldn’t provide details. The bodies have not been retrieved due to intermittent firing at the site.
A Major from 9 Para (SF), who took bullets in his chest and an arm, has been evacuated to the military hospital in Udhampur and is reported to be stable.
According to police, two terrorists are believed to be wounded and surrounded, and security reinforcements have been rushed to the area. “Acting on specific inputs, a cordon-and-search operation was launched in Dharmsal-Kalakote of Rajouri district. The hiding terrorists fired at the search party, leading to retaliatory shooting,” an officer said.
This marks the second shootout between security forces and terrorists in less than a week in Rajouri district. A terrorist was killed, and a large cache of arms and ammunition was seized on November 17 during a fierce gunfight in the district’s Budhal area.
The adjoining districts of Rajouri and Poonch have recorded an increase in terrorist activities, challenging the security situation in the Jammu region. Alert security forces have thwarted several attempts from across LoC to disrupt peace in J&K.
