Student Protests: Union Polls: Protesting Students Climb University Gate With Petrol | Jaipur News

Jaipur: Students at Rajasthan University (RU) continued their protest on Thursday too as some of them climbed the main gate of the university with petrol and blocked the main gate.

Students have been protesting since last week demanding conduction of union elections as the government announced that elections will not take place this year.
On Thursday, protesting students took out the funeral procession with the effigy of higher education minister Rajendra Yadav and burnt the effigy in the university campus. During this, there was a clash between police and students as they closed the main gate of the university, and three students were injured. Some aspiring student leaders also sat at the main gate of the university after removing their shirts as a means to gather attention of the authorities.

Student leader Harphool Chowdhary said, “We have been on hunger strike since five days now and the health condition of more than 12 student leaders deteriorated, but none of the government’s representatives came to talk to us. If the government does not fulfil our demands at the earliest, we will be left with no option but to die.”
In RU, two students climbed a water tank on Tuesday, and on Wednesday students climbed the administrative block and the Central Library. Around 10 students also entered the VC’s residence and office after pouring petrol on themselves as part of protest.
Students said that this year around 15-20 vice-chancellors have written to the state government stating that they will not be able to conduct elections as universities are using all resources for implementation of National Education Policy and the admission process, after which the government announced that student union elections will not take place this year.
Meanwhile, the dean of students’ welfare (DSW) on Thursday locked the student union offices of RUSU leaders. The DSW gave one day’s time period to RU president Nirmal Chaudhary and said that his office will be locked on Friday. The DSW office had issued notices to the student leaders earlier too after the last academic day as their term had ended.
