Jaipur: Psychiatrists say that tobacco consumption is an addiction but there are ways of quitting it. “Nicotine affects neurotransmitters in the brain that help regulate mood. One of these neurotransmitters, dopamine, primarily exerts its effects on the brain, due to which a persons feels in better mood and, to maintain it, the consumption of tobacco increases with time and tuns into addiction,” said Dr Akhilesh Jain, head of department of psychiatry at the Centre’s ESI model hospital.
He added, “A person can quit tobacco with counselling, nicotine replacement therapy, avoidance of common triggering conditions, diverting attention, physical activity on regular basis, and yoga exercises.”
Rajan Chaudhary, coordinator of Rajasthan Tobacco Free Alliance, demanded strict measures to make access to tobacco difficult. TNN
