Jaipur: Moderate to heavy rainfall in almost every district of the state this year has given a new lease of life to the dams and reservoirs in the state. A majority of the dams in Rajasthan are now filled more than 95% of their capacity and have adequate drinking water storage for the next one year for different districts. Even the Bisalpur dam that caters to the drinking water needs of Tonk, Ajmer and Jaipur districts is now filled 97.81% of its capacity.
“When the monsoon season started this year in the last week of June, merely 20% of the Bisalpur dam was filled. On Thursday, its water level reached 315.38 RL/metre against the full capacity of 315.50 RL/metre. If rainfall continues in its catchment area and the flow of water is maintained, we may have to open the gates of the dam by Friday to release excess water,” said Manish Bansal, executive engineer at the Bisalpur dam.
The dams in Kota division, where floods have wreaked havoc in the past few days, are almost full. Excess water was released from the Kota Barrage and Jawahar Sagar dams in Kota district. “Presently Kota Barrage is filled 97.25% and Jawahar Sagar is filled 80.15%. When they reached the 100% level earlier this week, the excess water had to be released in coordination with the local authorities,” said an official with the water resources department.
With one fortnight left for the monsoon to withdraw from the state, the authorities are elated as they find most dams in the state have now got adequate water for the drinking water needs of different districts. Jaipur Met office said heavy rainfall is unlikely for the next five days.
