JAIPUR: After an almost 10-hour protest by ABVP members outside the office of the dean of student welfare’s office, University of Rajasthan, the candidacy of two ABVP aspirants, whose nomination papers were cancelled earlier in the day, was allowed. The nominations were approved after the university took legal opinion from experts.
After scrutiny of papers, the varsity had cancelled the candidacy of three aspirants – two from ABVP and one from NSUI – due to issues in documentation, said officials. In protest, ABVP members staged a stir outside the office of the dean of student welfare (DSW) alleging that the institute was supporting candidates of ruling party.
During the protest ABVP said, “By cancelling the nomination of ABVP’s general secretary and vice-president candidates, it has been proved that how much pressure the Gehlot government has on the varsity administration. The university is also rejecting the high court’s order. Journalists were also stopped by police at the office of dean of student welfare.”
The university was supposed to release the final list of candidates for RUSU election at 5pm on Tuesday, but ABVP members had gheraoed the DSW office from 1pm onwards and were raising slogans against the state government.
Officials from DSW had locked themselves from inside and were not being allowed to come out by ABVP members.
Till the filing of this copy, the final list of candidates was not released by the University.
ABVP members protesting at the DSW office threatened to commit suicide. “The varsity is being controlled by the state government and they are not even valuing the orders of the high court,” an ABVP member said.
DCP (East) Rajeev Pachar said nine youths with forged ID cards were arrested. Police said the youths were trying to enter the varsity premises.
