Student Union Election: Hc Issues Notice Over Ban On Student Union Election | Jaipur News

Jaipur: The Rajasthan high court on Monday issued notice to the vice chancellor and the registrar of University of Rajasthan as well as to the state government seeking their reply on the ban imposed on student union elections. The court has granted them one week’s time to submit their reply.
A bench of Justice Inderjit Singh gave this interim order after the preliminary hearing of a petition filed by Vikas Ghosalya.
Advocate-general M S Singhvi sought two weeks’ time for the state government, but this was opposed by the counsel for the petitioner, Tanveer Ahmed, who said that the government just wanted to kill time.
Tanveer Ahmed told the court that the state government issued an administrative order on August 12 to not conduct student union elections in universities and colleges this year.
“We submitted in court that the university is an autonomous institution and the state government cannot interfere by taking decisions on its behalf. The state government’s decision not to conduct student union elections is not within its jurisdiction,” Ahmed said.
He added that it is the fundamental right of students to stand for election to the student union and to vote for it. It was said in the petition that there is a provision in Article 13 of the Constitution that if any law is against the fundamental rights, then such laws will be considered void.
