Thalassemia: Thalassemia Patients Suffer As Jk Lon Hosp Bank Runs Out Of Blood | Jaipur News

Jaipur: Shortage of blood in government banks including JK Lon Hospital blood bank has taken a toll on the thalassemia patients, who need regular blood transfusion at the hospital, as their attendants have to run from pillar to post for blood donors.

Thalassemia affected children require more than 450 units of blood at the JK Lon Hospital every month. Though the hospital is making arrangements for blood groups, which are not available from other banks like Mahila Chikitshalya blood bank, the demand for more units requires more blood donations at the JK Lon Hospital blood bank. If the situation continues, it will cause trouble for thalassemia patients coming from different parts of the state.
“Last month we provided 470 units of blood to children living with thalassemia. We provide them blood without any replacement, and we do not demand any replacement from them. We provided 550 units of blood in July without any replacement to girls under Ladli Rakt Sewa Yojana,” said Dr Satyendra Kuntal, incharge, JK Lon Hospital blood bank.

On Tuesday, B negative and O negative blood groups were not available with the hospital and only one unit of B positive was available.
The blood bank at JK Lon Hospital is searching for donors. Though the staff of the blood bank has donated blood to cater the needs of the patients, it is also searching for donors from paramedical staff, nursing staff and other healthcare staff of the hospitals attached to SMS medical colleges. Besides, it is also seeking help from social organisations and clubs who assist in blood donations.
Rajasthan Chartered Association of Physiotherapy officer bearers including Dr Sanjay Kumawat met officials of JK Lon Hospital’s blood bank to help them in blood donations. He said, “We will circulate the message in our group of physiotherapy appealing to them to donate blood.”
Not only JK Lon Hospital, but other government hospitals are facing a more or less similar situation.
