Three Create Fake Profile Of Nagpur Police Chief, Arrested |
Jaipur: The scammers in Mewat are creating counterfeit social media profiles of police officials to bilk money from unsuspecting victims, with the most recent case involving the arrest of three men from Alwar’s Kakrali village, who defrauded a man of Rs 24,000 by impersonating a senior Nagpur police officer’s profile.
SP (Alwar) Anand Kumar Sharma said that Nagpur police on Friday arrested three suspects idenitfied as Surendra Singh (28), Taufik Khan (25) and Sampatram (33) from Kakrali village under the district’ Sadar police station area.
On Friday, with the assistance of the Alwar police, the Nagpur police apprehended the accused and transported them to Nagpur, as the case was registered there.
The Nagpur police informed the Alwar police that the accused had set up a fraudulent social media account impersonating the Nagpur police chief, through which they swindled a man of Rs 24,000.
Sources within the Rajasthan police have informed TOI that the Mewat region, spanning across Bharatpur, Alwar, and Deeg, harbours multiple cyber crooks who have duped numerous individuals by creating counterfeit social media profiles of IPS officials, including several state DGPs, to commit fraud on social media platforms.
According to one official, a DGP from a North-Eastern state filed a complaint that the accused had established a fake social media profile impersonating him and had started soliciting money from people.
‘This is an old tactic where the suspects use photos and names of prominent officials to start contact with individuals on social media, particularly targeting vulnerable individuals, and then employ various deceits to defraud their victims,’ added the official.”
The police stated that whenever their counterparts from different states come seeking arrests, they extend local support.
