Three More Gib Chicks Hatched Artificially, Number Mounts To 27 | Jaipur News

Jaisalmer: Three more chicks of Great Indian Bustards (GIB) have been hatched by the artificial hatching technique in the captive breeding programme run jointly by Desert National Park (DNP), Rajasthan government and Wildlife Institute of India (WII).
Three eggs were picked from different places and subjected to artificial hatching, thereby taking the total number of GIBs at DNP to 27, including these three chicks, said Ashish Vyas, the DCF of DNP.
After this, the GIB Conservation Breeding Centre at Sam in Jaisalmer district has announced the successful breeding of five new members of the critically endangered species of birds, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing conservation efforts.
Earlier, two female GIB chicks were hatched by the artificial hatching method at Sudasari Breeding Centre. The number of GIBs is constantly increasing, said officials. “Captive breeding is proving successful. Newborn chicks are being raised in a scientific manner, and food i being given to them in the presence of WII scientists and experts,” said Vyas, adding that a total five chicks were hatched in this season.
WII chief scientist and Sudasari Breeding Centre in-charge Dr Suthir to Dutta said only about 100-150 individuals of the of the critically endangered species of GIBs are left in the wild.
