Top court admits special petitions challenging acquittal of convicts | Jaipur News

The Supreme Court on Friday admitted special leave petition (SLP) by Rageshwari Devi and others in the 2008 Jaipur serial bomb blasts, challenging the Rajasthan High Court verdict that acquitted the four accused who were given death row by a trial court.
A bench of Justices Abhay S Oka and Rajesh Bindal while accepting the plea filed by victims’ family members issued notice to the state government and the accused. The court has summoned records from the trial court while posting the matter for the next hearing on May 17. The state government’s SLP will be taken up on May 17 along with the other petition.
The state government was represented on Friday by attorney general R Vekantaramani and additional attorney general Manish Singhvi who also assailed the high court order.
The victims’ families moved the Supreme Court challenging the Rajasthan HC order on March 29, 2023, which acquitted four accused in the 2008 Jaipur serial bomb blasts case.
The high court found serious lapses in the investigation and evidence.
The SLP was filed by the families of victims of serial bomb blasts that occurred at eight places in the city on May 13, 2008, killing 80 people and injuring over 170 persons. In total, eight FIRs were registered out of which four were registered at Kotwali Police Station, Jaipur and the rest at Manak Chowk Police Station, Jaipur.
“The present appeal represents the plight of the innocent citizens and their families who were victims of serial bomb blasts and who are facing grave injustice due to impugned order where after waiting for justice for more than 14 years, the convicted persons were acquitted based on gross misapplication of law by the high court,” the petition said.
The petition also said that the entire appreciation of law as made by the high court is so grossly erroneous and contrary to settled principles of law of appreciation of evidence that a bare perusal of the impugned order would be sufficient to shake the conscience of the top court.
