Woman Says No To Alimony Paid In Coins |
Jaipur: A woman refused to accept coins amounting to Rs 55,000 brought by her husband as alimony arrears in a family court in the city on Monday. An application filed in the court on her behalf said any transaction in coins for more than Rs 1,000 is invalid under the Coinage Act, 2011.
She urged the court to ensure the money be given in currency notes or her estranged husband be sent to jail for failing to abide by the court’s order for paying alimony. The man, who had not paid alimony for 11 months, had on June 17 deposited Rs 55,000 in coins as maintenance for his estranged wife, Seema Kumawat. The court did not pass any order the woman’s application on Monday and posted the matter for the next hearing on July 5.
Kumawat’s lawyer Ramprakash Kumawat said, “According to the Coinage Act, 2011, the weight and shape of the coins should be the same when they were issued. Besides, it will set a bad precent in such cases if the husband, Dashrath Kumawat, is allowed to pay alimony in coins.”
Dashrath, a roadside vendor, was married to Seema about 12 years ago. They have a daughter who lives with Dashrath. The couple started having a dispute after about three years of marriage, prompting the husband to seek divorce.
